Hemp hurd is derived from the core of the hemp stalks. Also known as hemp shives, they are similar to wood chips and are composed of short, woody fibers. The porous nature of these fibers allow the free flow of air and makes them very absorbent. Hemp hurds are naturally resistant to mold and bacteria, making them excellent as an animal bedding for both small mammals and horses. Hemp hurds are the raw material used to make both hempcrete (hemp cement), as well as engineered wood products such as particleboard and fiberboard.
